Epitheca bimaculata

Hello again,

It was the first time i had a chance to photograph that species, Epitheca bimaculata, during last weekend on the lakes. It was also the great experience how different the species could be. It was Saturday, a rainy and warm day which i spent near small lake hidden in the trees - my usual place i take photos of transforming dragonflies. Due to rain, only small group of larva's went out of water, especially Cordulia aenea, Libellula quadrimaculata and Epitheca bimaculata. Two first species started to transform during the day, no matter it was the rainy day, but third one - Epitheca bimaculata - didnt start. I waited few hours but larvas were just sitting in the grass and small bushes, waiting for the better weather conditions. I was hoping that it wont take too long, but was wrong. Seems like this species doesnt transform while raining. The larvas stayed in the same place during the whole day and night, and half of next day, and started to transform about 11 am on Sunday. It took about 28h for them to start, never seen anything like that. Other species always transformed in bad conditions, but not Epitheca bimaculata. It was quite hard to keep myself patient, but i was able to do that and finally i took some pictures. One of them below.

great picture of a special moment. For me, technically perfect and nicely arranged. And I want to mention that I am quite jealous when you tell how often you witness such scenes; I am happy to see that once a year, if at all.

Some time ago i did a deep research in the places i usually visit during weekends. The result was just fantastic, i found few small areas where 10+ dragonflies species transform every year.
